Emily Whitehead’s Fight Against Leukemia

Although childhood cancer is distressing, improving therapy and care offers hope to many families. Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) has supported many tenacious, inventive, and optimistic childhood cancer survivors. One such remarkable success story is that of Emily Whitehead, whose battle with leukemia captured the world’s attention. After being diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) at five, Emily endured difficult chemotherapy without improvement. However, her family’s CAR T-cell therapy enrollment changed everything. This innovative medication transformed Emily’s immune cells to fight cancer cells. Emily became the first pediatric patient to get CAR T-cell therapy, going into remission and paving the door for more children to receive this life-saving treatment due to researchers, physicians, and organizations like ALSF.

Zach Sobiech’s Triumph Over Childhood Cancer

Another successful story is that of Zach Sobiech, whose singing and spirit inspired millions worldwide after overcoming childhood cancer. Zach refused to be defined by his 14-year-old osteosarcoma diagnosis. Zach wrote heartfelt songs throughout chemotherapy and surgery. His song “Clouds,” about love, optimism, and resilience, went viral after his cancer diagnosis. ALSF created the Zach Sobiech Osteosarcoma Fund to fund research and treatment of rare children’s malignancies. Jacob Thomas is another example of ALSF’s impact on childhood cancer. At three months old, Jacob was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a rare and aggressive cancer. Therapy was difficult. His family urgently sought a cure for Jacob’s cancer following surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation. Jacob entered a promising immunotherapy research study because of ALSF’s advocacy. This revolutionary immune system-targeted cancer cell-killing method gives children like Jacob hope for hard-to-treat cancers. Jacob is now well and inspires other cancer kids.
